History

Wemberly Ware

Originally the Western Australian pottery factory was known as Calx Porcelain & Paint Company Ltd. It was the first company in Western Australia to produce ceramics in 1921, for which it did under various company names until 2006 when it finally shut its doors permanently.

Wemberly Ware is a line of pottery produced by the Calyx Porcelain Works around the 1950s which was trading under the name Bristile China. Wemberly Pottery became Australia’s most widely available range of pottery with a fast range of different designs.

As a means to avoid tax, the company solely produced Wemberly Ware with a basis of being used in a household, most of their items had a “practical” design in contrast to something that was solely produced as a decorative item.

For many decades the Wemberly ware line stay popular amongst the Australian households with a large amount of success with their designs attributed to John Tribe and Ruby Neevay who pushed the boundaries of the designs and encouraged the other modellers to creat new exciting designs.

With the change of name from Bristile Ltd to Futuris Ltd in 1992, It saw the end of the Wemberly Ware era and the new dawn of the Australia Fine China brand, with mass production of ceramics and other wares from china, the company closed its doors in Australia in 2006 leaving behind a 85 year history in ceramic production in Western Australia, the Australian Fine China brand is now produced in china.

Wemberly Ware is now collected all over the world with its bright colours and true Australian design, it can add history and feature to any home and will always have a place in the collecting world.
